Quinquagesima
In the readings for Quinquagesima Sunday, also called Shrove Sunday, we read in Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians of the absolute requirement of divine love (agape) or charity towards God and humanity. He compares all the spiritual gifts to the gift of divine love and asserts that they are of no personal value to the bearer without the gift of being able to love. This also points out the truth that one cannot earn their way into the Kingdom by performing great wonders and mighty works. The gift of salvation is free to those who are able to receive it. So is the gift of the love of God.
True acceptance of the love of God is accompanied by the desire to share it with others. The Gospel or good news of God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ is simply too wonderful to keep it to yourself.
In the gospel for this Sunday taken from Luke Jesus preps his chosen witnesses or apostles to accept and understand his coming death. They do not understand from his words so Jesus, as they approach the city of Jericho, performs a miracle to help them to see. A blind man receives his sight after calling for mercy from Jesus and addressing him as Son of David. Son of David is a title of the messiah. The miracle was performed on a man who “sat by the way.” Christians in the early church were referred to as people of the way, through this man receiving his sight the Lord signals to his apostles that they too must be able to see to find the way. Jesus is telling them and us that he is the way.
“I do not seek to understand in order that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe-that unless I believe I shall not understand.” St. Anselm
