The Collect.
O GOD, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man's understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Romans vi. 3 - 11
The Gospel. St. Matthew v. 20 - 26
Fr. Roddy shares with us this week:
"Quotes of Theology"

Our faith is what saves us. The foundation of our victory over the world and death is our faith. Faith is a gift from God. Whosoever asks for faith in sincerity will receive it. And as for those who say they have no faith, they either do not want it or have the same faith the demons have, as when the Jews retort to Christ that they believe in God he replies, “The demons believe also and tremble.”

“Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” And this is the core of our faith, the belief in Christ and his promises to us.

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. This verse tells us how Christ comes to us. Baptism and Holy Eucharist, mystically wrapped up in Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension.

For there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. Our faith is not blind, there are witnesses that we can be sure of and trust.  Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist are our sure witnesses.  Baptism and confirmation impart the heavenly gifts, the blood of Christ ensures that we do not lose them, and our frequent reception of Christ’s body and blood ensures that the gifts that God has given us will grow and enlarge until they overshadow our broken humanity.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of His Son.  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: The gifts that witness to us are internalized, and thus no one can take them away from us. Any man who witnesses to us, as I am witnessing to you today, may be proven false and untrustworthy, but the witnesses that God has internalized in us are never proven false. Just as we know ourselves and are painfully aware of our sins and shortcomings, so we know that the message and law that God has written on our hearts is true because it stands apart from our sinfulness and witnesses not only to the truth but also witnesses against us when we do wrong.

He that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that it gave of His son.  And finally, as in any argument or disagreement over a contract, only one interpretation is correct.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist, far from being a formal set of manners reflecting the etiquette of an antique generation, is the teacher of theology and the divinely appointed way to approach the majesty of God. It is not created by man, but rather the Holy Ghost flowing through him.

Let me make this plainer, one does not choose God, rather God chooses them. This is not to be confused with the erroneous doctrine of predestination but is more accurately described as the "mystery of election." A drowning man does not choose to be saved, he may merely cooperate with his rescuer, unless his intention is to commit suicide

All things come of thee, O Lord,
and of thine own have we given thee
