The Collect.
KEEP, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy; and, because the frailty of man without thee cannot but fall, keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle. Galatians vi. 11 - 18
The Gospel. St. Matthew vi. 24 - 34
Advice from Jesus to his disciples
You’ve got to serve somebody; there are only two choices.
Nearly fifty years ago when Bob Dylan was going through his Christian phase, he wrote an album of hymns. One of those songs was titled “Serve Somebody.” “Well, it may be the Devil or it may be the Lord but you’re going to have to serve somebody” reads one line.
In this coming Sunday's Gospel Jesus says unto his disciples “no man can serve two masters,” and “Ye cannot serve God and mammon,” with mammon figuring the Devil. Jesus is describing the choices available to humanity concerning this earthly life and the things it has to offer, riches, power, pleasure contrasted to the peace he offers that surpasses all understanding. He also promises that God will take care of our basic needs, food, shelter, and clothing and adds that we should never have anxiety over these things.
On the other hand, to serve, or more accurately become a slave, to mammon, i.e. the Devil is to live with anxiety over the acquisition and retention of the things of this world which we will lose when we die anyway. To place your priorities on these things is to become a slave to desire and anxiety.
Jesus has told us to place God first and all the things you need shall be added unto you. That is a promise. Peace in this world and everlasting peace in the next.
