The Collect.
O ALMIGHTY God, who by thy blessed Son didst call Matthew from the receipt of custom to be an Apostle and Evangelist; Grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires, and inordinate love of riches, and to follow the same thy Son Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle. 2 Corinthians iv. 1 - 6
The Gospel. St. Matthew ix. 9 - 13

Apostles and Evangelists

September 21st is the Feast of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist. He is the author of the first Gospel and one of the Twelve Apostles hence his dual title. St. John also is an Apostle and Evangelist for the same cause. Mark and Luke are styled Evangelists but are disciples not being of the Twelve.

Matthew (also called Levi) was a tax collector or Publican for the Roman government and hence widely despised. Jesus called him as he was working at the customs house, and Matthew closed the office and took Jesus to his home for lunch. A large crowd was collected along the way and they all ended up eating together. There were even some members of the Pharisees there and they asked some of the disciples “Why does your Master eat with Publicans and sinners?” Jesus overheard their question and told them “I will have mercy and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Matthew is also a martyr having been killed by the brother of a king that Matthew had converted along with his wife. The King died and his wife having taken a vow of chastity refused his brother’s advances resulting in the death of Matthew.

St. Jerome had a copy of a gospel in Hebrew which he used to guide himself in his translating the Bible into Latin. Orthodox biblical scholars think it was possibly Matthew’s Gospel.
