The Collect
O GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
¶ This Collect is to be said daily throughout Whitsun Week.

When He Cometh
Many decades ago, as I traveled from Alexandria to Pikesville, Maryland for duty with the 58th Infantry Brigade I would often listen to a Christian radio broadcast. One evening I heard a guest who spoke with an upper class English accent and described himself as an “ordained Anglican clergyman” speak not about damnation but about salvation. When the interview ended the station played a hymn I had only heard once before as a boy in my church in Georgia sung by the pastors’ 9-year-old daughter as a solo. It was not in our hymnal.
For decades I searched for the lyrics, I remembered the tune by heart. When YouTube came along, I searched there also with no luck.
After I was ordained a priest I took the email address of anglicancatholicpriest@yahoo.com and have had that address for over 25 years now. I then searched for a tagline for my emails and came up with this;
Malachi 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Today as I was searching on my hard drive for something to include in this e-letter I found the lyrics, I don’t remember how I got them, and as I read them as though for the first time I saw to my amazement, they are keyed on my selection from Malachi. It was like a sign to me.
Here is what I found. We will try and sing it on Sunday.
When He Cometh
Malachi 3:17 “They shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him.”
Words: William O. Cushing, 1856. Music: George F. Root, 1866
When He cometh, when He cometh
To make up His jewels,
All His jewels, precious jewels,
His loved and His own.
Like the stars of the morning,
His brightness adorning,
They shall shine in their beauty,
Bright gems for His crown.
He will gather, He will gather
The gems for His kingdom,
All the pure ones, all the bright ones,
His loved and His own.
Like the stars of the morning,
His brightness adorning,
They shall shine in their beauty,
Bright gems for His crown.
Little children, little children,
Who love their Redeemer,
Are the jewels, precious jewels,
His loved and His own.
Like the stars of the morning,
His brightness adorning,
They shall shine in their beauty,
Bright gems for His crown.
